It is important to understand what the mother is feeling and to ensure that they are supported physically and emotionally, a Doula is trained to empower this. Women can feel apprehensive in labour, and can lose sight of the goal they want to achieve, a Doula is there to act as a intermediary between mother/father and hospital staff.
The support I offer is labour and birth: this involves 2 antenatal/2 postnatal visits, continuous support throughout labour until after the birth (however long it takes) and unlimited telephone calls to ensure adequate support.
I AM NOT TRAINED TO MAKE MEDICAL DECISIONS BUT AM THE MOTHERS SUPPORT IN WHATEVER SITUATION SHE WANTS.
About me:
I'm originally from Stockport, but moved to Chesterfield the day after giving birth to my first child, William.
3 Years after I then had my second child Mae. I was extremely lucky that my husband, Tim is a very hands on dad and was there after the birth of my children to look after them and me. He was my doula and without him, family and friends I would still be in my nighty!
I became interested in becoming a Doula as I realised that not everyone has someone, and even if they do they just need that extra support.
What is a Doula?
A Doula is a Greek word that represents a woman who helped other women. In today's world a Doula is a woman who help ladies and families during and after pregnancy and offers support during labour and delivery.
Why have a Doula?
Everyone can explain about their own experiences of giving birth, some people have a wonderful time and some not. Everyone is different. Women who are having their 1st child have the fear of the unknown, women on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th child etc have the realisation of what is coming. Women need an emotional and physical support, this is exactly what a doula is trained to do.
